Artweaver: Freeware Alternative to Corel Painter

I have been looking for an open source alternative to one of my favorite digital paint programs: Corel Painter. It seems that Artweaver is just that a freeware alternative (unfortunately not Open Source :-/ ). It’s simulates brush strokes, has the same layout as Painter (no need to really learn a new interface), and you can mix colors just like you would with real paint. This is a great tool for traditional fine artists like painters who have been wanting to break into digital art but just weren’t sure how to approach it. You can also choose paper textures and canvas textures.

Right now it’s only for Windows users, hopefully a Mac version will be out soon.

Check out Artweaver’s website here: http://www.artweaver.de/index.php?en_version

Go out there and paint happy little digital trees! Enjoy! :-)

  1. I just checked it out, and while I think it’s a great application, and still plan to download and install it, it appears that Artweaver is only a freeware application, and not, in fact, open source. It does proclaim (loudly, which is where you likely got the idea that it was open source in its entirety) to use open source Pascal based plugins, which is kind of nice, but the application itself does not appear to have any license information, the ability to download the source, GNU GPL compatibility information or any other indication that it’s open source. Sorry, Angel – I think your search goes on. I was really looking forward to advertising the hell out of this software, too.

  2. This application is a nice start but can’t really compete with Corel Painter. Too bad it’s not Opensource, or maybe that would change.
